Maliovitsa Peak

Maliovitsa peak is located in the north western part of the mountain of Rila. Its altitude is 2729 meters. The resort, bearing the same name, is located at the foot of the peak. It is one of the most frequently visited winter resorts.

Maliovitsa peak is one of the preferred places for alpinism and mountain climbing. The highest Alpine walls and the hardest mountain climbing route in Bulgaria are situated here. To walk up to the top of the peak is possible for two or three hours along the marked trek. Fascinating mountain landscapes open from the peak.


Maliovitsa Resort

Maliovitsa Resort is situated in the locality called Mecha Poliana, in the lower widening of the Maliovitsa River, at the altitude of 1720 m above the sea level. The resort is named after the highest peak in the north western part of Rila. This part can be righteously called ‘a quiet paradise nook” It is located at about 40 km from Borovets Resort, but it is smaller by size.

An asphalt road connects the resort with the village of Govedartsi (13 km) and with the town of Samokov (27 km) There are several ski tracks in the area as well as sports facilities - there is a ski-wardrobe and all things of first necessity for the winter sports. The snow cover stays here comparatively long. Depending on the snowfalls one can ski here as late as May.

Maliovitsa is a famous place in the Bulgarian alpinism and mountaineering. Besides the peak of Maliovitsa, there are about a dozen other Rila mountain peaks in the region, turning the foot of the mountain into the most coveted part for mountain climbing and mountain trekking in Bulgaria. Actually, it is here that the highest alpine walls are situated as well as the most difficult climbing route in Bulgaria.

This magic place is the favorite one for the alpinists. It was created for them with its interesting and difficult sites for climbing as well as with the unique beauty of the panorama, opening for them the peaks of Maliovitsa and Orlovets, Zliya Zab, Lovnitsa and Kamilata.

The Horrific Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes on the Balkan Peninsula is located nearby.

Maliovitsa is a starting point for many hiking routes, which are directed to the north-western part of Rila to Ivan Vazov Chalet (7 hours); to Ribni Ezera Chalet (9 to 10 hours); to Rila monastery (6 hours); to the refuge of The Horrific Lake (3 hours); to The Seven Rila Lakes (8 hours on the ridge and 5 hours under it)

The peak of Maliovitsa can be reached walking up the marked pathway within two or three hours.

There are regular bus services to and from the village of Govedartsi and the town of Samokov.
