Lake Iskar
Lake Iskar is the largest inland lake in Bulgaria and stretches 15km along the main Sofia-Borovets road and is a very beautiful, impressive sight. The lake is 30km south of Sofia and is a hive of activity for tourists in the summer time.
During summer you will find the Samokov to Borovets road lined with cars and having picnics and enjoying the facilities at the Lakeside.
For this reason alone, it gives an all year round holiday destination to the beautiful Borovets area. Water sports in summer and skiing and boarding in the winter. Public transport is available and regular from Sofia with bus stops along the way giving access to Samokov and Borovets.
At Lake Iskar you will find lovely private little bays and will have a great choice of where to set down your blanket in a private place and spend quality time with your family and friends. You can enjoy the privacy of the coves and the facilities of the restaurants around the lake.
The most popular restaurant has a large terrace where you can enjoy the fabulous cuisine and gaze out over the breathtaking view of the lake.
You can hire boats and pedalos to take a trip out onto the lake and because the lake is well protected from the elements, it is excellent for the inexperienced boaters who will find the calmness of the lake a pleasure.
Further down the lake towards Sofia - for those of you who enjoy extreme sport in summer, you can enjoy the wind surfing but this cannot be done all year round due to ice in the lake.
Also you will have the opportunity to jet or water skiing, whichever takes your fancy.
For those of you who want to enjoy more than the water, then the Iskar stables are close by. From here you can take horse rides around the lake and even up into the mountains. For the walkers and hikers, again you can take a trip round the lake, although this will probably take a couple of days due to the size of the lake, you probably won’t meet anyone, the views and panorama are breathtakingly fabulous and you can even camp out under the stars if you want.
At the Samokov end of the lake you will find the fishing enthusiasts. The hardiest of fishers will sit out all night, the temperatures being balmy, enjoy a barbecue at your camp fire and enjoy a night to remember!
Lake Iskar really does have everything you could want for a fantastic summer holiday without the crowds of the beach and sand in your sandwiches!
